In the early 1900’s, William L. Murphy came up
with the brilliant idea for a mechanism to store his bed away in his closet
while he had guests over at his small apartment. The Murphy bed became popular and have been
favorites of small apartment dwellers ever since.
Unfortunately, with the lack of available steel
during the 2nd World war, the Murphy bed all but disappeared. Actually, the only place you could find an
Antique Murphy bed, would be on those old black and white comedy shows that
were so popular in the mid to late fifties and early sixties.
Today, the antique Murphy bed is one of the most
sought after items for antique collectors who are happy to embrace and relive
the energy of that great period at the beginning of the 20th
century. Many urban professionals are surprised to find antique Murphy beds in
older apartments and early century homes in and around major cities.
